General RPGs are all over the iTunes App Store and Google Play, so this article concentrates on those taking place in space. Ahead full speed!

Star Legends (Android & iOS): This highly-rated RPG claims “millions” of players worldwide. Choose from Commando, Operative, and Engineer character classes for your vaguely anime-looking 3D avatar. Although there’s definitely space flight, most of the action is person-to-person, and the graphics, while a bit cartoony, are of very good quality. The currency of the game is platinum, which you can either earn in-game and pay nothing to play or buy with real dollars and cents. Star Legends can also be played on the desktop through a Google Chrome app.

The Infinite Black

The Infinite Black (Android): Choose to be a pirate, warrior, trader, or corporate overlord in this free-to-play game. (You can still purchase in-game currency, BlackDollars.) In addition to designing and advancing your character, your ship can be customized from one of 13 templates. It’s still technically in beta but claims “tens of thousands” of users already. With more development, maybe they can design a space station for their screenshots that doesn’t look quite so exactly like Deep Space Nine from Star Trek.

Vendetta Online

Vendetta Online (Android): This Windows, Mac, and Linux game has been around since 2004 and now has an Android client. The free demo gives you eight hours of play, after which it costs $10 per month. You play a pilot in one of three factions, so there’s plenty of real-time space combat to enjoy, either with other players or computer-controlled adversaries. It doesn’t have the largest player base, but those who’ve stuck around since the early days are quite dedicated.

True space-based MMORPGs are difficult to find on iOS. Other than the cross-platform Star Legends, your choices range from the MMO real-time strategy games Galaxy Empire and Space: Uncharted (which is also on Android) to pretty much abandoned MMO projects like Project MOS, a space combat game with very few RPG elements.
